As much as we all wish every rescue story had a happy ending, unfortunately reality is that sometimes the kindest thing is to send a dog to the Bridge, where they will no longer need to struggle or hurt.

Here is Walter’s story, in the words of his rescuer:
“I was contacted by a shelter in Alabama, where Walter had been surrendered by people that claimed they found him in their yard (shelter staff suspected they were the owners). They shared he was not doing well in a shelter; they thought he might be partially blind and deaf and seemed disoriented. They gave his age as 5 to 6 years old and of course we agreed to help this boy. He came into foster with Barb M in Atlanta and with many issues including: head tilting, inability to climb stairs more than 3 stair. Upon examination by Barb, we felt this Boy was closer to 13 to 14 years old. At night he would wander and ‘get stuck’; Barb would sleep on the couch with him at her feet. He became a velcro boy and worshiped her.
“We knew Walter’s chances at adoption were slim, but we were not willing to let him die in the shelter. We took him to a vet for evaluations including: physical exam, blood work, shots, microchip, hip xray and a FREE eye consult. It was determined that Walter had DRA, was partially deaf (ear infection), had a UTI, and his hips were not in good shape. His age was estimated at 13 or 14, and although he initially walked in circles, he became more oriented and began to follow his foster mother. Although he initially seemed to improve, his blood work was done twice and 2nd time results did not look good. Unfortunately, he collapsed and appeared to slip into a coma. He was rushed to the vet where he was diagnosed as being in an Addison’s Crisis. With many tears, Barb and I sent him to the Bridge. I have always had a special place in my heart for Seniors….Walter was loved and cared for and had 6 peaceful and loving weeks with Barb.”
