Maisie turned up at a high kill shelter as a stray with no microchip. The shelter noted that she appeared to have recently had babies, she had yellow discharge coming from her left eye. She was spayed by the shelter with no complications, aside from persistent bloody discharge, that the vet wasn’t really concerned with. She was diagnosed with a corneal ulcer and began various eye drops and creams. She was noted to be sneezing in the shelter and her condition worsened until she was admitted to a vet ER and finally diagnosed with pneumonia. She stayed at the hospital where she received oxygen therapy, IV antibiotics, and new topicals for her ulcer. She was further diagnosed with descemetocele, a deep corneal ulcer. One of the shelter volunteers, who had been walking Maisie while she was there, adopted her knowing her condition & potential cost of saving her eye. This after her original adopter falling through. Maisie went straight from the hospital to her new family so she wouldn’t have to go back to the shelter. Maisie’s adopters were told her eye wasn’t urgent and that it would be two weeks before the clinic could take care of her eye, and they couldn’t find anywhere else to do it sooner. While waiting, they noticed that her eye had a “growth” on it and took her to an ER where they discovered that her ulcer had perforated. Unfortunately, the first clinic didn’t communicate that descemetocele is a serious condition that needs immediate care and treatment. If Maisie wasn’t still dealing with the pneumonia, she would have had the surgery to remove the ulcer she needed immediately, but, it was better to be concerned for her life and wait for the surgery. Maisie had her surgery, which while it took a little longer than normal, it was successful and her lungs sounded very good after her bout with pneumonia.
