The Story of Hondo

Last update 09/20/2025

Not every dog has a happy ending. However, because of your donations, every dog gets a chance for one. Hondo was pulled from a shelter with suspected cataracts and a large mass in his groin. On exam Hondo was found noted as cryptorchid with suspected testicular cancer. He was also anemic and had hair loss from extended malnutrition. He was treated for anemia and our foster was advised to wait a bit before neutering until bloodwork levelled out. Once it was fine, he went in for his neuter, but was lethargic afterwards. He went to a critical care hospital and was eventually diagnosed with IMHA and hospitalized. He received all the typical autoimmune suppression treatments for several days including a blood transfusion. He survived and went back to his. The rescue soon got a message from the foster that Hondo wasn’t doing well. He’d crashed again. The vet did another sonogram that showed an abnormality with his prostate, his PCV levels were dropping back down. The vet added different meds to his regimen. After another transfusion and no improvement, Hondo was set free. He was trying so hard, but just didn’t have any fight left. He had a hard, short life but was loved dearly by his foster. He was cremated and his remains were scattered at his foster’s home. He was loved very much in that short time he was with her – and sometimes, that is everything.
