CorgiAid’s primary goal is to help homeless corgis get healthy, so they can find permanent loving homes.
From time to time, CorgiAid helps a very newly-adopted dog who turns out to have an issue that clearly existed at the time the dog was adopted. Heartworm is that kind of issue.
Here is Dexter’s story, in the words of his adopter:
“23 May I responded to an ad on local craigslist that a MN Corgi mix needed a home. I lost my 14 y/o corgi mix to Adenocarcinoma 21 March 2012 and have been thinking it was time to get another dog. On the phone I was told he was a healthy happy dog but she (owner) was tormented by loss of her older dog and just wanted to be through with pets. My husband drove 90 minutes to meet the dog and introduce our 11 year old rescued Dachshund mix to see if she approved. It became clear in talking with the owner that this corgi boy was not abused but neglected. Feed poor quality food, no medical treatment, spent considerable amount of time outside away from the family. He got along well with my Cinder (Dachshund mix) and we had a nice calm quiet trip home – then today I took him into vet for wellness check up and discovered he was HW Positive.
“He is approximately 5 years old, he was infested with fleas and dirt and smelled awful. His owners fed him Ol’Roy from Wal Mart. While I knew adopting this dog would end up costing us more at first in vet bills I refused to leave them there to be treated no better than a lawn ornament. He is quite the snuggler and very quick to learn. He’s never known what a dog bed is or a squeaky toy. I am ashamed of the human race today.”
CorgiAid supporters will help Dexter with the expense of getting rid of those nasty heartworms. He has found a loving home, and this will let him stay there but lose the worms. Thank you!
