As much as we all wish that every rescue story could have a happy ending, sometimes that is just not what happens.
Tissue alert.
This is Paul’s story, in the words of his rescuer:
“Paul (fka Zap) was located in a Houston shelter. Apparently the shelter knew who his people were; they just couldn’t be bothered to come for him. Paul was slated for euthansia due to his age and condition. Many of the corgi nation had a hand in Paul’s rescue. Once I declared he would have a forever home with me in AL for however long that was, it was less than 24 hours later that he was pulled from the shelter, vetted, and arrangements made to transport him to AL. Although deaf and mostly blind, as well as ill, Paul was gentle and a gentleman. He did not startle to humans or dogs. When I touched him while napping he simply woke up, ‘Oh, I’m here and you’re here too.’ He accepted his medicated baths and grooming and myriads medications with typical corgi stoicism and no aggression. He snuggled under blankets and enjoyed cuddles. His house manners were impeccable to the end. (Amazing, given the condition he was in and the fact that I have 2 boys of my own.) I had hoped to help him along long enough for him to be infection free, but it wasn’t meant to be. He was septic and his kidneys shut down. He was euthanized in my arms on 11-28-11.”
