Here is Shorty’s story, in the words of his rescuer (who is also his vet):
“Shorty was given to his previous owners by a relative, who told them he had “mange” but didn’t tell them the extent or expenses involved in treatment. We saw the dog on Feb 3, 2006, diagnosed Demodectic mange and started his treatments. This is one of the worst case of Demodex I’ve seen in almost 20 yrs of practice. His initial treatment involved anesthesia to shave & clean the raw infected lesions, started on antibiotics for secondary staph infection, fatty acid & anti-inflammatories, plus starting him on a medicated bath / dip program. His owners paid the bill (~ $250), but didn’t think they could afford the ongoing expense of treating his condition. Today, Monday 2/6, they brought him back for euthanasia, because their relative was not willing to pick up the expenses. We convinced them to surrender the dog to corgi rescue instead, which they have.
“Shorty is going to require on-going treatment for generalized Demodectic mange. It will require at least 4-6 weeks to get him improved enough to even consider putting him up for adoption, and he will require on-going care after adoption. Even with our discount at the vet hospital, the expenses are more than our small rescue group can afford, yet he’s a very sweet dog who deserves a chance.”
CorgiAid supporters will help Shorty get well. Please send him your good thoughts as he fights to get comfortable in his own skin. Thank you!
