Here is Lucky’s story, in the words of his rescuer: “Lucky was pulled from our County Shelter. His owner passed away and he was turned in. The County said he was neutered (he was not) and he is overweight at 58#. He has now lost 8 lbs and is still losing. He is now at 50# He looks to be Corgi/possibly Golden Retriever mix. He could hardly stand up and was limping when I saw him and was very depressed. Because of his weight and limping he was not going to be adoptable. He had sores under his chin and his paws were raw and bleeding. He was not eating much at the shelter, leaving most of his food in the dish.
“Upon examination, we found not only was he intact still, but his teeth were broken off with roots exposed and his molar had one of the largest cavities we have seen. Another molar had a slab fracture. We figured out this was why he wasn’t eating very much.
“His lab work shows a slightly low thyroid level, so we have started him on thyroid medication and his weight loss is going nicely. His skin and coat are clearing up also.
“Lucky had numerous exposed roots where his teeth had rotted and fallen out. He also had large cavities in one molar and a slab fracture in another. He has hot spots under his chin and his paws were raw and bleeding, from what may be allergies. He has a low thyroid level, and he is now being treated with thyroid medication, which should help his skin conditions and his weight problems.
“Once Lucky’s mouth has healed from the extractions and the thyroxine gets into his system and he gets on a routine diet, he should be adoptable very quickly. He is very sweet and adores getting attention and belly rubs. Once he loses a few pounds, he will be able to breathe a little easier in this heat and probably start running a little.”
