Oakley

Here is Oakley’s story, in the words of her rescuer:

“A family of 5 dogs came into my care. When the dogs arrived, I noticed that the mother dog’s tail had been “docked” at a weird length (6″-8″ long). One of the puppies had a similar length tail, two had natural tails, and one pup had rubber band on her tail to “dock” it, but it had not come off yet. We were advised by a vet over the phone that as long as the tail was not painful and did not look infected that it should come off, however archaic the whole practice seemed. The dog with the banded tail is Oakley. 10 days later, I picked Oakley up from her foster and on the way to her forever home, I noticed that the tip of her tail that had still not come off yet was hard and that it appeared to be causing her pain. Less than 24 hours later, she was taken to the vet and she went in for a tail amputation.”
