A well-known Corgi rescue group was tagged in a post by a shelter about a young Corgi that had been hit by a car and had multiple fractures. When they looked at the post, they saw that he had been claimed by his owners, much to their relief. However, it wasn’t long before they received an email from someone saying they had an injured Corgi that was hit by a car, and that they wanted financial help and for him to find a home. It was the dog that had been at the shelter. His injuries were estimated to cost $11,000 and they wanted to surrender him. Buddy was taken in and an experienced foster was found for him. Buddy was taken to a vet for examination and after a consultation with a orthopedic specialist in young dogs, as Buddy’s growth plates had not closed, the orthopedic team agreed that Buddy was a candidate for surgery and should go on to lead a normal life with the always assumed risk of infection and the normal assumed risk in repair of this nature. Because of the multiple fractures, Buddy had to have a two-part surgery, one side of his body on one day, and then the other three days later. Buddy ended up requiring three different surgeries. He had complex fractures of the tibia and femur on the right side that required multiple plates and screws on his short little legs. He needed a femoral head ostectomy which restores mobility to the hip by removing the head of the femur. This removes the ball of the ball-and-socket joint, leaving just an empty socket. Buddy has gone through an awful lot for any dog, never mind a young one. According to the rescue and foster, he’s been a trooper through the whole ordeal. He still has a long way to go to recover, but he has a good prognosis and life ahead of him.
