The Story of Mac

Last update 03/02/2024
Mac is a young Pembroke who through no fault of her own ended up being fostered by a well-meaning person when other potential owners fell through, or could not care for her. During her foster care, she came up limping. The vet at the time felt it was a strain, and in fact it seemed to get better with time. The foster family were busy and hadn’t really done a lot to find her a home, and Mac and the female Pembroke already in the home, were getting into fights. Mac once again began limping. After more diagnostics, it was determined that Mac had Legg-Perthes, a condition that occurs when the ball at the top of the femur loses its blood supply and breaks down inside the hip joint. The surgical treatment for this is a femoral head ostectomy, which restores mobility to the hip by removing the head of the femur. This removes the ball of the ball-and-socket joint, leaving just an empty socket. Unfortunately, in compensating for the pain and discomfort of the hip, and from falling due to it, Mac’s other hip looked as if it had a fracture and there was damage to other joints. In the midst of all of this, the happy news is that Mac found a couple who wanted to adopt her, ensure she gets the surgery she needs and is willing to go through the extensive rehabilitation with her.
