The Story of Cooper

Last update 03/21/2026

Corgi rescue was contacted by a family moving to Georgia from Louisiana. Their new jobs entailed a lot of travel, and there was no time for the dog, so they surrendered Cooper. Unfortunately, Cooper was heartworm positive, intact, and in dire need of a dental cleaning. His veterinarian consulted with a cardiologist, asking if the dental cleaning could be performed before heartworm treatment, due to the horrible condition of the dog’s teeth. It was recommended Cooper complete his heartworm treatment prior to any anesthesia for a dental and neuter due to the high risk of complications of anesthesia for a dog with heartworms. The vet recommended his carers attempt to help remove some of the plaque with dental chews and additives to his water until the procedure can be performed. He has had basic preventatives and when he is clear of heartworms, and it is safe, he will be neutered and have his dental issues addressed.
