Here is Truman’s story, in the words of his rescuer: “Truman was one of two stray PWCs found in Contra Costa (San Francisco Bay area, CA). He was taken into Contra Costa Animal Services Humane Society shelter. They placed him on “rescuer only” status, due to the unusual pigmentation on his nose, which could have indicated several types of health issues. A biopsy of the nose tissue was indicated as appropriate by the shelter vet.
“We have had his nose biopsy done. It confirms that he has Canine Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE).
“DLE is a very managable condition, not life threatening, that puts Truman into the “special needs” category. We are looking for someone with the dedication necessary to ensure he receives the appropriate medications, as needed, and the financial means to ensure that he receives the health care he will need to continue to monitor his progress. We have started him on the appropriate medications and he has already shown signs of improvement.
“DLE is a condition exacerbated by sunlight, so applying sunscreen (specific type for dogs) to his nose and keeping him inside during the day is important. The cause of DLE is unknown. An overview can be found here: http://www.dermvet.com/discoidlupus.htm
“Truman has shown himself to be about the best companion corgi one could ask for. He has a lovely temperament. Gets along well with three other corgis in his foster home. Loves to be with all people, and play happily with other dogs. He is the penultimate, sweet, easy corgi! A very nice dog!”
