As much as we wish all rescue stories could have a happy ending, reality is not that gentle.

Here is Rachel’s story, in the words of her rescuer:
“Rachel and Phoebe (probably her daughter) were taken to the shelter by a man who claims to have found them, but most of the shelter staff believes he was their owner. He was from another city and I’m sure he didn’t want to be prosecuted for Rachel’s condition. Rachel is a sweetheart who just wants to be held and loved on, and scratched (please, oh, please scratch me). She has a horrible skin condition, most likely demodectic manage. Most of her teeth are gone, and it almost looks intentional. All front teeth are missing, and the canines have been snapped in half. She seems to have an ear infection. Her nails are curled under. Her tail was docked by unprofessional, uncaring hands and has terrible scaring and some sort of hematoma at the end of it. She has been bred so many times, her lady parts have started to come out. Her eyes bear the clouds of old age, and may or may not be partially blind. She is in desperate shape, but we hope to make her comfortable and if not adopted let her live her life out here.
“Update: Unfortunately, Rachel’s issues were too much for us to fix, and we had to send her to the Bridge. She did not have mange, but severe yeast infection. She was mostly blind, had double ear infection and advanced heartworm. She just did not have anything left to give, and it was with great sadness but conviction that we did what was right, that I holding them together on my lap, I escorted Rachen and Phoebe to the Bridge together. Rest in peace Sweet Girl.”
It is hard enough to read this sort of story. Imagine having to write it.
